at the end of an era

Interpol

Wire

As of now, I’m sure EVERY SINGLE FUCKING PERSON ON EARTH knows that Michael Jackson is dead, so there’s no need to dwell on that.

What I find most disconcerting is the media’s and ensuing public reactions.

On LiveWire, people are going off their nuts, some even saying that because of the alleged (and acquitted) charges against him (which were all obviously true right?) his passing should not be mourned, especially not by the mere fan. What bullshit. I mean, I’ll concede I think they’ve gone a little overboard, but he was an icon. He shaped and revolutionised so many aspects of musical culture, dance and was a humanitarian. No one can deny that. He was the King of Pop. That title should not be disputed.

One of his accusers apparently admitted yesterday that the allegations were false.

The way the media has handled the whole situation is appalling. Everyone is just cashing in on his death. It’s ridiculous. Their portrayal of him as just done a 180. he has gone from “Wacko Jacko” to a fallen hero. They focus now, retrospectively, on his humanitarian work, musical legacy and influence, whereas in the past decade and a half, it was his actions, court case, scandals, bizarre behaviour and expenditure that got all the screen time. Fuck that. I mean, I had no delusions about how two-faced the media was, but shit.

These celebrities all over the world, mostly America, expressing their grief. It’s insane. All of his advocates are trying to feed this attitude as much as they can, especially if there is a profit to be made. Ex-publicists-turned-authors, managers, lawyers, friends and even family that maintained his innocence are painting this picture of a frail, victimised man, with a stolen childhood and mental instability. Whether there’s any merit to it or not is irrelevant. Everyone is taking advantage of his passing. His songs are back in the charts, his albums and memorabilia are experiencing record sales. Gotta ask yourselves why. Out of genuine fanaticism, or “he’s been martyred and as we’ve seen from previous generations, this will be worth a small fortune eventually.”

The very nature of our greed as humans frightens me sometimes.

But hey, we need all the economic stimulus we can get.
