Bat For Lashes
The Duke Spirit

As I read in a neat little article here (http://www.thelocal.se/20232/20090623/) a Swedish couple are refusing to reveal whether their toddler is a boy or girl.

It’s a neat idea, really, but come on. Good in theory, admirable motives, and to a less extreme extent, should be recommended to many parents.

It’s all well and good to let “Pop” decide what “Pop” wants to wear, be, do, etc, but I don’t know. I’m not saying forcing gender roles on a child is good, but some people can’t forge an identity for themselves in the absence of society’s guiding hand. It might suck, but if Pop can’t find a niche for itself, Pop will be incredibly gender confused, possibly damagingly so.

I can understand wanting to ease a child into whatever role they choose, but Pop is alone in it’s upbringing, surrounded by children in conventional gender roles. It could be potentially damaging to feel outcasted, different and Pop may find difficulty socialising. Whilst Pop might be comfortable in a genderless identity, other children just beginning school have the ingrained preconceptions their parents have passed onto them, and also think the opposite gender is icky. Where does Pop fit in?

Bitch, if you don’t know what it is, how do you know if it has cooties?

Not to mention highschool, assuming Pop hasn’t defined itself a gender by then, concepts of sexuality will be skewed. Plus, ya’know, public bathrooms will be just weird.

Inherently, their motives are in the right place, but they’re not going about this the right way, and you can’t expect so much change all at once, let alone for a single child.

It’s their offspring. Not a guinea pig.

at the end of an era

Interpol

Wire

As of now, I’m sure EVERY SINGLE FUCKING PERSON ON EARTH knows that Michael Jackson is dead, so there’s no need to dwell on that.

What I find most disconcerting is the media’s and ensuing public reactions.

On LiveWire, people are going off their nuts, some even saying that because of the alleged (and acquitted) charges against him (which were all obviously true right?) his passing should not be mourned, especially not by the mere fan. What bullshit. I mean, I’ll concede I think they’ve gone a little overboard, but he was an icon. He shaped and revolutionised so many aspects of musical culture, dance and was a humanitarian. No one can deny that. He was the King of Pop. That title should not be disputed.

One of his accusers apparently admitted yesterday that the allegations were false.

The way the media has handled the whole situation is appalling. Everyone is just cashing in on his death. It’s ridiculous. Their portrayal of him as just done a 180. he has gone from “Wacko Jacko” to a fallen hero. They focus now, retrospectively, on his humanitarian work, musical legacy and influence, whereas in the past decade and a half, it was his actions, court case, scandals, bizarre behaviour and expenditure that got all the screen time. Fuck that. I mean, I had no delusions about how two-faced the media was, but shit.

These celebrities all over the world, mostly America, expressing their grief. It’s insane. All of his advocates are trying to feed this attitude as much as they can, especially if there is a profit to be made. Ex-publicists-turned-authors, managers, lawyers, friends and even family that maintained his innocence are painting this picture of a frail, victimised man, with a stolen childhood and mental instability. Whether there’s any merit to it or not is irrelevant. Everyone is taking advantage of his passing. His songs are back in the charts, his albums and memorabilia are experiencing record sales. Gotta ask yourselves why. Out of genuine fanaticism, or “he’s been martyred and as we’ve seen from previous generations, this will be worth a small fortune eventually.”

The very nature of our greed as humans frightens me sometimes.

But hey, we need all the economic stimulus we can get.
